Artist’s Statement

I am a painter and visual artist originally from Lithuania, living and working in Dublin, Ireland since 2005. I hold a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Fine Art (Painting) from the National College of Art and Design, Dublin.

Each painting begins with something personal that carries emotional weight. I paint what stays with me, things that sit in the body and don’t easily go away. The work comes from themes of urban life, modern culture, socio-political issues, mental health, and LGBTQ+ identity, often from my perspective as a queer person. These themes are not separate for me; they overlap, the same way life does.

I mainly work with oil on canvas and mixed media, building images slowly through layers, using heavy brushstrokes when it feels necessary. I often start from something familiar: a place, a figure, a moment, and then break it down, repaint it, or partially erase it. The process mirrors how memory works for me: unstable, emotional, sometimes clear, sometimes distorted.

I don’t plan the paintings too tightly. I react, step back, sit with it, and let the image develop over time. What ends up on the canvas is not an explanation or a fixed story, but an emotional record. The paintings are a way of working through things I don’t always have words for, and leaving space for the viewer to bring their own feelings and memories into the work.
